5 Witchy Galentine’s Day Activities To Enjoy With Your Amiguis

Originally published in Refinery29 by me, Yvette Montoya.

The societal pressure for women to be coupled is always a little heavier when February rolls around. But despite the world’s, or maybe just mami’s, disapproving eyes, women are choosing to remain single and seem to be pretty happy about it. A 2024 study published by The Society for Personality & Social Psychology found that on average women were happier than men when single and showed greater well-being and satisfaction. And it’s not because we are repelled by love. Conversely, many of us have an abundance of love in our lives. Romance and intimacy are not limited to romantic relationships. Galentine’s Day reminds us that there are plenty of other fun ways to experience love, especially with witchy items like crystals, energy work, plantitas, and astrology.

While “low maintenance” friendships are becoming a trend, I personally like to invest my time into nurturing my relationships. With climate disasters on the rise and state-sanctioned attacks on the marginalized, community is critical to our wellness. In fact, close bonds make us healthier and live longer. As a bruja, bringing witchery into the mix only deepens these already-beautiful connections.

When witchy like-minded friends come together, it’s literally a recipe for magic. So why not engage in some activities that leverage that energy? Here are 5 witchy Galentine’s Day activities that will bring you and your friends closer together.

A Magical Potluck

Inviting one or a few friends over for a nothing-fancy, come-as-you-are meal — where everyone brings something yummy — can help build a sense of community. If you have the bandwidth to make all the food yourself and infuse it with intention, go for it. If not, identify the different elements you’d like to include in the meal, give everyone their assignments, and let them know the vibe is romance, abundance, and unity. Make it witchy with your ingredients: You can add rose petals, real cacao, or a pinch of cayenne pepper to your hot chocolate. Cooking with rosemary and mint is also great for opening hearts and building bonds

Crystal and Affirmation V-Day Card Exchanges

If you’re a crystal girlie like me, you love collecting them, wearing them, and you probably have quite the collection to choose from. For a cute Galentine’s Day celebration, gather your fellow crystal enthusiasts for a meetup. Think of this as a crystal white elephant, where you draw a name and pick your favorite crystal for them that has to do with love, romance, and friendship. Carnelian, agate, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, and moonstone are some great stones for friendship and relationships. Of course, a Galentine’s Day card is a must. In it, you can write a small affirmation they can say while holding their crystal. The card and crystal combo is really special. Don’t forget to charge them under the moon or in the sun or cleanse them with water if the crystal is water-safe.

Intentional Collages

This one is for the crafty girlies. Gather old magazines, colored paper, glitter, fabric clippings, gel pens, paints, or whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy, and prepare to get creative. Invite friends over, throw on a classic 2000s bestie film, and pull out the snacks, glue sticks, and scissors. I like setting an intention for my collages rather than vision boarding, which requires me to think long and hard about my “vision” for the future. The way my anxiety is set up, that can feel more like work than fun. Instead of envisioning things you want to attain, think about how you want to feel in your friendships and make a visual representation that will remind you whenever you look at it.

Magical Bouquets

Getting flowers is cool, but have you ever made a bouquet based on the magical properties of the flowers? This is a really cool way to make something beautiful together and to put intention into the energy you’d like to foster in your space and relationships. Daisies and roses tend to get all the love on Valentine’s Day, but there are so many other options for building a really vibey flower arrangement. Chamomile is great for protection, sunflowers bring vibrance, dandelions are great for communication, chrysanthemums are for joy, lavender brings clarity and calm, calendula brings in feelings of happiness, violets can help you stand in your power, and, of course, roses connect to your sensuality. Pick up some of your favorite flowers and get going.

Magic Charms

This is probably the witchiest suggestion: making resguardos or mojo bags with friends. You’ll need small red cloth bags along with some candles, crystals, resins, coins, dried herbs, dried flowers, and animal bones (if you have them). Cleanse your cloth bag with incense of your choice, then take a pinch of the herbs or flowers you want to apply to your manifestation. Cinnamon, saffron, and vanilla are great herbs for attracting love, wealth, and beauty. Rosemary, frankincense, and copal will help with clarity. Patchouli, mugwort, and bay leaves are perfect for drawing in your manifestations. Lavender, rue, and garlic are amazing for protection work. Add whatever other crystals, bones, and coins you feel called to, and burn a candle next to your creation to seal the deal.
